How Do You Find Out if Your Computer is Wi-Fi enabled?
I have a Windows XP Shuttle XPC desktop computer, and our family is thinking about switching from AOL dial-up to T-Mobile Hot Spot wireless Internet. That does require Wi-Fi though. How can you tell if your computer is Wi-Fi enabled? & Is T-Mobile Hot Spot a good Internet provider? What do you guys use? Rating?
You are confused.
All of the cellular internet carriers mandate use of their custom built card that you purchase from them to enable it to work. If your notebook is Wi Fi (802.11) enabled, you still need this card. It goes into a pcmcia slot in a notebook and into a pci slot on a desk top. It is good for one and only one pc and is not a networkable internet feed (e.g. routers and Internet Connection Sharing do not work with these).
Cellular internet performance parallels cellular phone performance – it really depends upon distance to the tower, weather, etc.
Cellular internet like cell phone is mobile – with the same type of quality restrictions.
Now if you wish to determine if your notebook has standard 802.11 Wi Fi (which is what you asked but not what you need for cellular internet), click on Start, right click on My Computer, click on properties, click on the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager button, and go down to Network Adapters and click the + sign to its left. It will show you all adapters (ethernet and wireless).
