Getting a desktop with a Blu-Ray player – is it worth it?
I’m looking to buy a desktop, and I won’t die if it doesn’t have a Blu-Ray player, but I kinda sorta want it. It’ll cost $120 more. The desktop will be for my dorm room in college. If I get it with a TV tuner, it’ll also replace a TV, as well as, of course, a stereo. Blu-Ray DVDs cost $35, and at amazon a lot of the titles are sold for about $20, and renting Blu-Rays apparently doesn’t cost more than renting regular DVDs (correct me if I’m wrong). I don’t even know if I’ll have money to rent or buy Blu-Rays, but I still kinda sorta want it (the player).
Also, would it be better to spend the $120 on upgrading the RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB, or to go ahead with the Blu-Ray player? Or neither?
How can I check if the monitor I have right now supports 1080p?
How much do those monitors cost?
I don’t think Blu-Ray is worth $120 extra…I’m pretty sure in a year or so Blu-Ray drives will be dirt cheap, just like when DVD writers first came out, they were over $250 now they can be bought for around $30….I’d wait
In the long run I think you’ll probably be happier with 8 GB of RAM in your PC more than the ability to play Blu-Ray movies.
See if your monitor supports 1920×1080 if so, it’ll handle 1080p
in general, monitors 24″ or larger can support 1080p.
