Converting Mac G4 tower hard drive as an external HD for laptop?

I currently have a Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) tower just sitting under my desk ever since I got a new macbook. However, I’m running out of room fast on my macbook hard drive since I’ve started to work with large photos and movies, as well as over a thousand songs on my itunes library.

So, as I only have about 20GB left in my 120GB hard drive, I started considering an external hard drive, when I came up with this idea. Since the computer itself is more than 7 years old, I don’t think I can put it to any good use other than recycling it or donating, but if I can find a way to just extract the HD and use it as an external HD, it would save me money and it’d technically be recycling.

Is there any way to do this, or would it just be easier and possibly cheaper to just donate the computer and buy myself an external hard drive?

You should be able to remove the hard drive from the case. You can almost completely disassemble the G4 internals, but you might have to drill out some rivets, and unscrew some screws, and pop out some plastics.

A friend of mine bought a 2nd hand G4 case, and modded it to fit a PC inside LOL, and he stripped everything out of it, but kept the HDD cage system intact to install his own hard drives into the same position.

I’d suggest looking up some modding forums for help if you need it.
