Purchasing an HP Elite HPE-170f Desktop. Should I worry about purchasing an expensive Best Buy warranty?
I am buying my first desktop in quite a while, as my laptops aren’t able to run certain graphics intensive computer games, very smoothly. I did some research, and even though I never wanted another HP system since my last HP laptop died on me after only a year and no abuse whatsoever, this HP Elite HPE-170f seems to be one of the best on the market right now. It has everything I need for a super gaming system and seems to have one of the most reasonable prices. I’m trying to keep this purchase as cheap as possible, so my question is, would anyone recommend getting an extended service warranty on the computer (such as what Best Buy offers) or is it something that is usually a waste of money??? Best Buy’s two year extended warranty is $219. The computer is around $1,300. Thanks for any help.
Extended warranties are always a bad idea.
If you want to spend a little extra money to guarantee this system lasts for several years…or much longer than you will want to use it anyway, I’d suggest:

Spend $70 on this immediately. The main thing that determines how long a computer system will last is the quality of the power supply. For your particular system, you can’t get better quality than a Truepower New 550.
HP has a nasty habit of equipping new systems with really crappy quality power supplies. I don’t know what’s in the HPE-170f, but I’d be tempted to replace it immediately with a Truepower New, if it was my system.

Always protect any new system with a good surge suppressor.
If you spend a little more than a hundred bucks on those two components, that will be VERY good insurance, much better than a useless EW from Best Buy or whatever.
Now, keep in mind that you get a standard 1 year warranty on the system from HP. So, take the OTHER hundred bucks that you were thinking of spending on the EW from Best Buy and just put that in savings or something. After the 1 year warranty expires, if a component fails a replacement will likely be less than a hundred bucks.
Example: Right now, your video card would be about $200 bucks to replace. If it fails within the 1 year warranty period, HP or the video card manufacturer can send you a replacement. If it fails at 1 year PLUS ONE DAY, the full retail price of that video card that’s selling for $200 right now will probably be $75-ish dollars. So take the hundred bucks you set aside today and buy a new video card. No big deal.
Or you could take the whole cost of the EW and put that in savings. I’d replace the power supply though. HP uses truly terrible quality power supplies, usually. I’d be shocked if your HP Elite came with a decent power supply.
