I know Xeon’s are used in servers but why are they?
You are right about the Xeon processors being designed for server environments. The Xeon is different in two regards. First, since it was designed for server environments, it has a substantially larger amount of on chip cache. Second, it was specifically designed so that it could be used in multiprocessor environments. For example, you can have systems with two or four Xeon processors interconnected to provide increased performance. Both of these design features added to the cost of the processor.
Intel has changed its design methodology and is now working on developing multicore technology which puts multiple processors on a single CPU chip. This was done because single CPU chips were reaching the limits of power consumption and operating speed. Essentially, you can maintain the same speed but enhance performance by utilizing multiple CPUs on a chip at a lower operating speed. The Xeon processor will most likely in time be replaced with Intel’s Itanium processor. Intel just announced a quad-core Itanium processor designed for server environments.
